About Moondance.Studio

My name is Dan Ermey and I’m a visual artist from Los Angeles, Ca. I design and create hand crafted, fine art sculptures in stone that are based on native symbology and iconography.

When I was kid and grownups asked what I was going to be when I grew up, I always had the same three answers…. Artist, Indian or Fireman! I’ve always been an visual artist. Scribbling down shadows of buildings or thinking up cartoon strips, art was my thing. When we played “Cowboys & Indians” I was always the Indian, ready to chase down the bison on my bicycle with my suction-cup bow and arrow. As a teenager, it became apparent that I was the guy who would rescue your cat from the tree and make sure no one was left behind. Now that I’m all grown up, it’s clear to me that I succeeded in my dreams and have become a mixture of all three.

As a young man, I went to art school attending the Los Angeles County High School For The Arts, (LACHSA) and then the California College of Arts And Crafts (CCAC). I was fascinated with symbology and the hidden meanings in signs and visual communication. I’ve had a successful 20 year long career as a graphic designer with clients in the music, entertainment and technology industries, including Universal Pictures, Entercom Radio and Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort.

And then one day it happened…
I woke up and realized that I needed to make more art that existed after the power went out. I needed to apply my graphic design knowledge to a project that enriched my soul. I needed to work with the symbols and find a new expression.

Let’s face it, human kind has been driven to leave their mark throughout history. From the paintings in the Lascaux cave, to the hieroglyphs of Egypt, to the desert canyons of the Pueblo people in the American South West, on up to the modern day symbology found in urban street art and graffiti… we, as people, want to leave an expression of our experience for future generations.
